Improving reading rate prediction with word length information: Evidence from Dutch

نویسندگان

چکیده

Previous research in English has suggested that reading rate predictions can be improved considerably by taking average word length into account. In this study, we investigated whether the same regularity holds for Dutch. The Dutch language is very similar to English, but words are on half a letter longer: 5.1 letters per (in non-fiction) instead of 4.6. We collected rates 62 participants 12 texts with varying lengths and examined which change equation accounts findings. observed were close best-fitting curve as soon was replaced length. predicts an will read at 238 minute (wpm). Reading sentences of uniform word length: Evidence for the adaptation of the preferred saccade length during reading.

In the current study, the effect of removing word length variability within sentences on spatial aspects of eye movements during reading was investigated. Participants read sentences that were uniform in terms of word length, with each sentence consisting entirely of three-, four-, or five-letter words, or a combination of these word lengths. Several interesting findings emerged. Adaptation of ...

Contextual Neutralization of Vowel Length: Evidence from Dutch

Based on recent experimental studies of word-final devoicing in languages like German and Catalan which show production differences between the neutralized and nonneutralized consonants., i t has been claimed that phonological neutralization is' incomplete'. It seems, however, that this claim is quite premature given that most studies have considered only the neutralizing phenomenon of word-fin...

Enriching Information Retrieval with Reading Level Prediction

The ability of a user to understand a document would seem to be an critical aspect of that document’s relevance, and yet a document’s reading difficulty is a factor that has typically been ignored in information retrieval systems. In this position paper we advocate for incorporating estimates of reading proficiency of users, and reading difficulty of documents, into retrieval models, representa...

Improving Translation Memory with Word Alignment Information

This paper describes a generalized translation memory system, which takes advantage of sentence level matching, sub-sentential matching, and pattern-based machine translation technologies. All of the three techniques generate translation suggestions with the assistance of word alignment information. For the sentence level matching, the system generates the translation suggestion by modifying th...

Use of verb information in syntactic parsing: evidence from eye movements and word-by-word self-paced reading.

We investigated whether readers use verb information to aid in their initial parsing of temporarily ambiguous sentences. In the first experiment, subjects' eye movements were recorded. In the second and third experiments, subjects read sentences by using a noncumulative and cumulative word-by-word self-paced paradigm, respectively. The results of the first two experiments supported Frazier and ...
